AUST University, RSIF, organise refresher workshop to strengthen fight against sexual harassment for safer campus
The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), in collaboration with the Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (RSIF), has trained students and staff to prevent sexual harassment and enhance grievance redress mechanisms. The initiative was part of the RSIF Refresher Workshop held on Wednesday in Abuja.
Prof. Azikiwe Onwualu, AUST President, said the programme reinforces the University’s zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and support for students and staff. He highlighted the importance of clear rules and accessible reporting channels to prevent and address harassment effectively.
Dr Evelyn Nguku, Head of the Integrated Capacity Building Platform at icipe, noted that safe learning environments improve productivity and research quality for PhD students and staff.
Bonfire Nyagah, Capacity Building and Safeguarding Specialist at icipe, emphasised the need to raise awareness of recognising, reporting, and addressing harassment in accordance with university policies and the law.
The workshop was designed for students, supervisors, and staff to create safer academic spaces, encourage honest conversations about harassment, and ensure robust support systems for victims.
AUST’s leadership was praised for its firm enforcement of safeguarding rules and commitment to fostering a secure campus environment.
