Dr Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, inaugurates electric tricycles and solar-powered charging stations in UNILAG
The Federal Government has launched its “Renewed Hope Campus Transport Scheme” at the University of Lagos, introducing electric tricycles and solar-powered charging stations to ease student mobility and reduce transport costs on campus.
At the event, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said 240 E-tricycles and 12 solar charging stations will be deployed across 12 public universities nationwide. Each institution will receive 20 vehicles and a dedicated off-grid charging hub.
Alausa said the scheme places student welfare at the centre of government policy. In a shift from previous models, the E-tricycles will be owned and managed by the students’ unions of the beneficiary universities. He said the approach would allow students to set affordable fares, generate income for maintenance and cut mobility costs by more than 70 per cent.
The minister also announced the approval of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative for UNILAG, including a CNG station and a free conversion centre.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, said the initiative aligns with the institution’s “Green UNILAG” agenda, noting that its electric buses introduced earlier in the year are already reducing emissions.
Student leaders welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant boost to campus transportation and welfare.
