Yayale Ahmed, led FG delegation in talks with ASUU leadership
The Federal Government has offered lecturers in the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) a 40 per cent salary increase as negotiations resume in Abuja. The proposal follows a consensus reached at ASUU’s National Executive Council meeting on Sunday.
A source said branch leaders will update members nationwide as discussions with the government continue next week. The move comes after ASUU’s one-month ultimatum expired, raising tensions over unpaid salaries, earned allowances, and the university revitalisation fund.
The government, led by a delegation headed by Yayale Ahmed, held talks on Monday and Tuesday to avert a potential strike. Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa, currently abroad, insisted that the government has addressed the union’s demands and is working to keep students in school.
The Nigeria Labour Congress has pledged support for ASUU, warning it will advocate for the academic community if negotiations fail. Both parties have maintained confidentiality on the discussions, citing strict rules governing the negotiation process.
