The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has seen a significant transformation in the first 100 days of Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu’s leadership. Her CARES philosophy, combining compassion with efficiency, has guided structural and operational reforms across the institution.
Obstetrics and Gynaecology received advanced equipment, improving maternal care and reducing delays. Radiology services have been accelerated, while the hospital’s medical gas plant has been reactivated, ensuring a reliable oxygen supply for critical care.
Staff welfare has been prioritised through a relaxation house, a crèche for children, and enhanced security, including renovated police posts and patrol vehicles. These initiatives have improved morale, productivity, and workplace safety. External support has also been secured for equipment and infrastructure, reflecting renewed confidence in UBTH as a reliable partner.
Ize-Iyamu’s administration emphasises process, continuity, and efficiency, treating the hospital as a dynamic ecosystem rather than just a facility. Corridors are livelier, departments operate with greater focus, and patient care has become more effective.
While challenges remain, the first 100 days have restored credibility and hope, setting UBTH on a path toward sustained reform and improved healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
