From Lesson Teacher to Nation Builder: How One Woman is Changing Lives with Education

In 2010, Florence Chinasaokwu Okpara founded Sharper Brains Model Private School with just eight pupils and a big dream: to provide poor children with a chance at a quality education. The initiative began as a small lesson centre, but in just a few years, it has grown into a lifeline for many families in Abuja.

Driven by passion, Florence transformed her love for teaching into a mission to bridge the learning access gap. Despite financial struggles and a lack of government support, her school has educated hundreds of children, many of whom come from low-income homes and would otherwise be unable to afford the fees. “We often waive debts for parents who genuinely cannot pay,” she said.

Nevertheless, running the school has not been easy. Due to land ownership issues and an unpredictable income from unpaid fees, Florence sometimes borrows to pay staff or initiate projects. “By the end of each term, I do not even know how I will settle salaries,” she admitted. Beyond education, the school also creates job opportunities for youth, helping to reduce unemployment in the area. “We are doing what the government should be doing,” she noted. She advised young educators to start small and remain patient.

 “Even if you begin as a lesson teacher, your passion and persistence will open doors.” On the ongoing teachers’ strike in the FCT, she called on the government to act fast. “Children are roaming the streets. Education must be a priority,” she said. Florence’s story proves that one woman’s vision can change lives — and inspire a generation.
