The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has recorded a significant achievement with the first harvest of cucumbers from its Screen House Farm, a collaborative project between the Faculty of Agriculture and the Kogi Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative.
The event, which was part of the activities leading up to the institution’s 9th Convocation Ceremony, was attended by top government officials and stakeholders. Representing the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Matters, Hon. Olusegun Joseph, commended the university’s commitment to agricultural innovation.
The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Olayemi Akinwumi, hailed the partnership with ACReSAL, describing the harvest as symbolic of growth and resilience. He said the initiative bridges theory and practice by exposing students to year-round vegetable farming.
Dean of Agriculture, Professor Olufumola Alabi, called the project the first of its kind in any Nigerian university and reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. The project serves as a training hub for students and local farmers, promoting smart farming, water conservation, and sustainable crop production.
