FUL Records First Cucumber Harvest from Screen House Project

Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has harvested and unveiled the first cucumbers from its Screen House Farm

The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has recorded its first harvest of cucumbers from the institution’s Screen House Farm, developed in partnership with the Kogi Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.

The event, held ahead of the university’s 9th Convocation Ceremony, was attended by government officials, academics, and dignitaries. It marked a milestone in FUL’s efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture and practical learning.

Representing Kogi State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Matters, Hon. Engr. Olusegun Joseph led the state delegation alongside the ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Barrister Ladi Jatto, whose support was described as crucial to the project’s success.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, praised the state government for its commitment to agricultural innovation and environmental sustainability. He said the harvest symbolised “growth, resilience, and opportunity,” bridging the gap between classroom learning and hands-on farming experience.

Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Olufumola Alabi, described the Screen House Farm as the first of its kind in any Nigerian tertiary institution and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing research and sustainable farming practices.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Engr. Joseph commended the initiative as a model for integrating education, environmental management, and food security in Kogi State.
