Prof Olayemi Akinwumi, Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja
The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Prof Olayemi Akinwumi, has called on members of the Nigerian Institute of Landscape Horticulturists to take urgent action against climate change.
He spoke at the Institute’s annual General Meeting, held from November 9 to 14, 2025, at the university’s old campus in Lokoja.
Akinwumi emphasised the role of horticulture in promoting sustainable urban development and ecological balance.
“Our nation and the world face climate challenges, deforestation, flooding, and environmental degradation. Experts like you must champion innovative landscaping solutions that beautify our environment and promote resilience,” he said.
Highlighting Federal University Lokoja’s green initiatives, the VC noted tree planting, eco-friendly infrastructure and sustainable land use as part of the institution’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
He commended the Institute’s leadership, local organisers, and Kogi State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo for supporting green governance.
In a keynote address, Prof Mohammed Isa Bala of FUT Minna explained that horticulturists are vital to urban resilience, turning planners’ blueprints into living, functional landscapes.
He stressed that every landscape tells a story and preserves heritage, urging practitioners to see themselves as custodians of memory and the environment.
