The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), in partnership with the Sustainable Livelihood and Development Network for Africa (SLIDEN Africa), has unveiled a strategic agribusiness training initiative designed to equip students with practical skills in agriculture and enterprise development.
Known as the SLIDEN Africa – FUNAAB Agribusiness Apprenticeship Scheme (SAFAAS), the initiative includes the revitalisation of the University’s Garri Processing Factory and the establishment of a ten-hectare cassava farm under the CAVA II Sustainability Project. The scheme offers hands-on training to students, cultivating a new generation of agripreneurs who are equipped to contribute to Nigeria’s food security and rural economic development.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, praised the project’s sustainability model and commended the leadership of Prof. Kola Adebayo, the project lead. Stakeholders across FUNAAB’s agricultural and business units also pledged continued support for the programme, which has already begun to reshape students’ perceptions of agriculture as a viable career path. Through SAFAAS, FUNAAB reinforces its role as a national model for university-driven agricultural transformation and youth empowerment.
