Prof Adetola Ajadi of the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Theriogenology at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has pledged N1 million for the best graduating student in his department during the university’s 33rd convocation.
Announcing the donation while delivering a lecture titled “The Silent Voices: Recognising and Relieving Pain in Animals for Better Welfare,” Ajadi said the award aims to motivate academic excellence and promote best practices in animal care.
He highlighted the importance of recognising physiological and behavioural indicators of animal distress, stressing that addressing pain and stress is vital for ethical treatment, better care, and enhanced productivity.
Ajadi discussed pharmacological interventions, including ketamine, tramadol, midazolam and gabapentin, noting the latter’s usefulness in pre-surgical pain management. He also highlighted chronic conditions, such as osteoarthritis, and suggested affordable biomarkers for monitoring disease progression in dogs.
FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, commended Ajadi, describing him as a foremost authority whose work adds global value to scholarship and animal welfare. He said the N1 million donation would inspire excellence and reinforce the importance of veterinary care among future professionals.
Ajadi further called for institutional support and policy reforms in Nigeria to improve animal welfare and strengthen the country’s livestock sector, which he said has significant economic potential.
