The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) inducted 77 doctors and 10 dentists on Tuesday, appealing to them to resist leaving Nigeria for overseas opportunities.
Provost Olufemi Idowu praised the graduates for completing rigorous training and urged them to practice with compassion and empathy. “Your stethoscope is more than a tool; let your knowledge be guided by humanity,” he said.
Representing the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Adeniran Kasali stressed that the inductees are the returns on the state’s investment. “The temptation to leave is understandable, but Lagos and your families have invested in you. Serve your nation; shun the urge to migrate,” he added.
Health Commissioner Prof Akin Abayomi highlighted LASUTH as a leading teaching hospital, noting expansion plans to accommodate more medical professionals and improve facilities.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello and LASUTH Chief Medical Director Prof. Adetokunbo Fabanwo also urged the graduates to remain, emphasising the country’s urgent need for skilled healthcare workers and the importance of empathy and professionalism in patient care.
The appeal addresses ongoing challenges, including low pay, heavy workloads, and poor working conditions, with government policies aimed at improving retention of medical professionals.
