The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) is at another turning point in its short but remarkable history. Since the establishment of the school in 2011, the university has quickly grown to become one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising institutions.
On August 1, 2025, the Governing Council of FUOYE announced the vacancy for the office of Vice-Chancellor. A new leader is expected to take over by February 2026. For the university community and beyond, this is not just another appointment. It is a call for someone with vision to carry FUOYE into its next season of growth.
From the very beginning, FUOYE showed signs that it would stand out. With a unique two-campus system, the university started strong. Its pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chinedu Nebo, laid the foundation. He was followed by Professor Isaac Azuzu, who concentrated on stability and staff welfare. Professor Kayode Soremekun then expanded the institution to 11 faculties and set the stage for a College of Medicine.
The story took a bigger turn under Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina. From 2021, his leadership brought a new vision and energised the university. Under his watchful eyes, FUOYE grew to 17 faculties, offering modern courses such as Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and Journalism. The ambience and physical environment of the school also changed dramatically, with hundreds of new structures springing up across the two campuses.
Fasina also cared for people. He promoted more than 100 professors and other staff, boosting morale and loyalty. Students recorded outstanding successes, too. Nine became ICAN-certified before graduating, while seven others secured PhD scholarships in top universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. There was even a “One-Day Vice-Chancellor” contest, where a female student got to lead the institution for a day – an idea that gave students confidence and inspired many.
Academic staff equally made their mark, winning multi-million naira research grants and bringing honour to the university. The results spoke loudly: FUOYE became one of the most talked-about universities in Nigeria.
Now, with Professor Olubunmi Shittu serving as Acting Vice-Chancellor, the university is preparing for a new chapter. The challenge before the next substantive leader will be to protect Fasina’s legacy while also raising FUOYE to new heights.
From a young university in Ekiti to a centre of excellence attracting national attention, FUOYE has proven that with exemplary leadership, possibilities are endless. The next Vice-Chancellor must now ensure the light continues to shine.
