FUOYE Queens in the 27th female NUGA competition
The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Queens have clinched their first NUGA female football title, defeating defending champions the University of Lagos (UNILAG) 2-1 in a gripping final in Jos.
FUOYE came into the fixture under dramatic circumstances, having initially lost 9-0 to hosts University of Jos (UNIJOS) in the semi-finals. However, their fortunes changed after lodging an official protest alleging that UNIJOS fielded ineligible players. The complaint prompted a review which ultimately led to the disqualification of UNIJOS and reinstated FUOYE into the final.
The Ekiti side seized the opportunity, taking the lead early with a well-taken effort from their forward line. They doubled the advantage soon after, applying pressure on UNILAG’s defence and maintaining control for large spells of the match. UNILAG managed a late goal, but FUOYE’s defence held firm to secure a landmark victory.
Speaking after the match, FUOYE’s sports director, Dr Adewale Adeyemi, hailed the team’s resilience. “This victory is deserving. The girls showed great character,” he said.
Head coach Olusola Ogundele praised her squad’s teamwork and spirit, while captain Glory Odey dedicated the win to their supporters, calling it “a triumph for FUOYE and women’s football in Nigeria.”
