Prof. Felix Ilesanmi Alao, speaking at FUTA’s 188th inaugural lecture
Prof. Felix Ilesanmi Alao of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has called for efforts to make General Mathematics accessible and less intimidating to students at all levels.
Speaking at FUTA’s 188th inaugural lecture titled “Mathematics: Myths, Mysteries and Life”, he urged teachers to adopt friendly teaching methods and for governments to invest in modern classrooms, laboratories, and teaching aids.
Prof. Alao described mathematics as the foundational language of science, technology, engineering, commerce, and everyday decision-making.
He stressed that the subject equips learners with analytical thinking and objectivity, noting its applications in budgeting, construction, computer technology, sports science, health sciences, and even wartime strategies such as Operations Research during World War II.
He also called on education administrators to hire qualified mathematics teachers, offer competitive remuneration, and provide special allowances to encourage excellence. Parents, he said, should nurture children’s interest in mathematics rather than discourage it.
FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, praised Alao’s lecture and mentorship, describing him as an authority in his field whose guidance has produced graduates excelling across diverse sectors.
