Digital competence should be embedded across all academic and administrative operations in Nigerian universities, rather than being treated as an isolated concept.
This was the position of Professor Ayo Olajuyigbe, Director of the Advancement Centre at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), during a workshop for early career academics organised by the university’s Centre for Career Services (CSS) on July 2, 2025. Speaking on the theme “Career Service for Accelerated Career Growth and Employment,” Prof. Olajuyigbe emphasised that digital literacy is a foundational skill that should be embraced by both staff and students for institutional and professional advancement.
In his lecture titled “Introduction to Career Services,” Professor Olajuyigbe described career services as a structured institutional unit within an educational setting that supports students in making informed career choices, developing relevant employability skills, gaining work experience, and successfully transitioning into the labour market.
He said it operates through counselling, workshops, internships, partnership with employers, career fairs, entrepreneurship support, among others. He advocated that digital competence training and associated configuration must be embedded in all programmes and skill development for students and those training them.
Professor Olajuyigbe highlighted the objectives of the Career Service programme as a Centre to provide early and continuous career guidance and counselling, develop student employability and life skills, foster empathy, facilitate internships and attachments, promote work-integrated skills, support entrepreneurship and alternative career pathways, and encourage lifelong learning and adaptability.
He noted that the functions of the CCS include career counselling, assessment, employment skill development, entrepreneurship development, job search support, employer and career fairs, and internship and industry engagement.
