HerCode Technology Initiative has urged the Federal Government to create strong policies that will help more girls study Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The group stated that this is crucial for closing the gender gap in the tech industry.
Speaking at an outreach event held at Naandiret International Academy in Abuja, founder Dr Oluchi Ufomadu stated that many girls, especially those from low-income communities, lack access to technology education and mentors. She warned that if nothing is done, Nigeria may leave behind half of its population in the ongoing global digital and AI growth.
Ufomadu called for government partnership to support more girls in STEAM. She said, “When women are empowered, everyone benefits.” The school’s principal, Victoria Owolewa, thanked HerCode and appealed to the government to support schools with the necessary equipment. Students were also happy and excited to learn new things about technology.
