Gov. Monday Okpebholo has vowed to set up a committee to screen institutions that are eligible to hand over to missionary schools across the state.
The Edo State administration made the announcement earlier on Monday, following its meeting with Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi in Benin. Okpebholo stated that the current administration will continue supervising all institutions under renovation until all rehabilitation works are complete.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also confirmed the governor’s statement, adding its perspective on the subject. Institutions likely to be eligible for missionary schools include St. Angela’s Grammar School, St. John’s Grammar School, and Our Lady of Fatima College, among others.
Dunia disclosed upon visiting the governor that the previous administration had failed to yield to the church’s appeal to help restore proficiency in the educational sector. He emphasised that missionary schools are vital not just for building academic excellence but also for the moral upbringing required to shape responsible and value-driven citizens in society.
The Edo Muslims for Equity and Good Governance (EMEGG) and the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Edo Chapter, are criticising the governor for returning schools to missionary organisations. Both groups urge the government to rethink the decision, stating that it does not serve the interests of Muslim students and teachers.
