Higher Education as Key Driver in Global Perceptions

Education has always been one of the most powerful tools for shaping a nation’s global image. Countries like the USA, the UK, France, and South Africa have often leveraged the prestige and allure of their universities to enhance their nations’ global image.

Unfortunately, Nigeria has not been able to do the same. The country has continued to suffer an image crisis in the international community, mainly due to recurring crises in the higher education sector. The frequent strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), inadequate infrastructure, and inconsistent government policies have damaged the country’s global reputation. As many experts often say, “The way a country treats its universities is the way the world will treat that country.”

In sharp contrast, a recent University of London global survey has shown how higher education can serve as a key driver of positive global perception. The survey captured the responses of nearly 3,000 graduates who studied online from over 190 countries. The report showed that 85% of respondents believe UK higher education plays a significant role in shaping global perceptions of Britain. Indeed, the influence of British universities extends well beyond the classroom, as it is also felt across cultures, economies, and global industries.

The report also shows that 81% of graduates believe their UK degree has enhanced their career progression, while 65% say it has provided them with opportunities they would not have had otherwise. Nearly nine out of ten graduates confirmed that their degree remains relevant to their current career, while three-quarters said it helped them secure their present job. These figures underscore how education—when properly managed—can serve as both an economic engine and a diplomatic bridge.

In the United Kingdom, higher education has evolved into more than an academic pursuit; it is now viewed as a global export that enhances “soft power.” Graduates across the globe view the UK as a hub of academic excellence, with 67% stating that UK degrees are highly regarded by employers and 78% agreeing that a UK education is crucial in the global job market. Some even noted that the value of the qualifications that they obtained from the UK has increased since graduation. This clearly shows the enduring power of a reputation built through education.

According to Professor David Latchman, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of London, “What emerges from this survey is clear evidence of UK higher education’s continued global influence. It is a bridge between the UK and the wider world.” Similarly, Sir Steve Smith, the UK’s International Education Champion, said the survey confirms that British higher education “remains transformational in its global impact.”

For Nigeria, the message is clear: when universities are stable, well-funded, and globally connected, they become more than schools—they become ambassadors. The UK’s example demonstrates that education can significantly influence how the world perceives a nation. If Nigeria must rebuild its global image, fixing the cracks in its higher education system is not just an option; it is a necessity.
