The member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency in Ebonyi State, Hon. Chinedu Ogah, has expressed strong opposition to the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) proposal to introduce Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Ogah, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Correctional Services, stated that the plan could undermine science education in Nigeria, arguing that science subjects require practical, hands-on assessments rather than computer-based formats.
“If you are proposing CBT for WASSCE, how do you combine titration when you are combining carbon oxide with CO₂ to get a result?” he asked during a press briefing on Monday in Abakaliki.
He further criticised the recent Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination glitches, alleging sabotage by a staff member in the board’s ICT department who targeted the South East.
Ogah called on the JAMB Registrar to conduct a thorough review of its personnel to prevent future disruptions. He also advocated for the early integration of ICT in Nigeria’s education system, urging the government to equip all primary and secondary schools with digital infrastructure.
“We are killing our education; we will be killing our Science,” he said, warning that failure to prepare students adequately could jeopardise the future of science learning in the country.
