Members of the House of Representatives have raised concerns about the high rate at which lecturers and non-academic teaching staff leave universities.
The House Committee on University Education stated that the staff gap poses a threat to the quality and stability of higher education in Nigeria.
Abubakar Fulata, chairman of the committee, expressed concerns over the issue during an oversight visit to federal and state-owned universities in the South-East. Fulata made it known that as staff leave tertiary institutions, a huge vacancy remains unfilled.
Citing the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN0, Fulata said the 3,000 staff members who have left the institution due to retirement or death since 2019 have not been replaced.
Expressing his frustration, he said, “It is equally unhealthy for the system to have about 3,000 people leave and be granted approval to recruit only 500. This imbalance undermines academic continuity and institutional capacity.”
