The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in partnership with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), has launched a two-day media training workshop on effective communication of agricultural biotechnology.
The programme, which began on November 3, 2025, at FAB Hotel, Zaria, brought together spokespersons, scientists and lead farmers involved in Genetically Modified (GM) research and advocacy.
Declaring the event open, the IAR Executive Director, represented by the Deputy Director, Prof Nafiu Abdu, stressed the need for clear and credible science communication to enhance public understanding of biotechnology.
AATF’s Irene Choge delivered a presentation titled “Overview of Ag Biotech Campaign and Why the Voice of Scientists Matters,” noting the importance of scientists’ involvement in shaping public perception of GM technology.
Experts from ABU’s Department of Mass Communication, Dr Muhammad Hashim Sulaiman, Dr Kabiru Danladi and Dr Qaribu Yahaya Nasidi, led sessions on media engagement and communication strategies.
The workshop aims to equip participants with the skills to communicate biotechnology research accurately, confidently, and responsibly, thereby fostering public trust and acceptance of modern agricultural innovations.
