The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has inducted a record 1,600 accounting technicians, the most significant number in the history of its Accounting Technicians Scheme, West Africa.
The induction took place at the ICAN Centre in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, during the scheme’s 63rd induction ceremony. The new figure surpasses the previous record of 1,303 inductees set earlier this year.
Speaking at the event, ICAN President and Council Chairman Haruna Yahaya told the inductees that the qualification conferred both professional recognition and responsibility. He urged them to uphold integrity and competence, noting that accounting is central to business and public accountability.
He said the Accounting Technicians Scheme, run under the Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa, was a standardised qualification that ensures certified technicians are fit to serve across the region. The new inductees now join more than 35,000 ICAN-certified accounting technicians and gain professional recognition across West Africa.
The special guest of honour, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, said accounting technicians play a key role in organisational productivity and transparency. He stressed the importance of professionalism, continuous learning and ethical conduct, adding that proper financial accountability was essential to effective governance.
The ceremony ended with the oath of allegiance, formally admitting the inductees into the profession.
