ICAN celebrates Global Accounting Day 2025, with its South-West regional event hosted at YABATECH, Lagos
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) joined global accountants to celebrate International Accounting Day 2025 at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos. The event highlighted the role of accountants in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
Chief DCS Alaribe, speaking on behalf of ICAN President Mallam Haruna Yahaya, described accountants as “unsung heroes” who sustain financial stability across various sectors. He traced the profession’s roots to Luca Pacioli’s 1494 work on double-entry bookkeeping, noting its enduring influence on modern financial management.
Dr Fadipe Adeniyi Olubunmi, Dean of YABATECH’s School of Management and Business Studies, praised the college for hosting the event. He highlighted the department’s achievements, including producing two ICAN-qualified students while still in school, securing second place in a regional competition, and participating in industrial training in Japan.
YABATECH Rector, Dr Adedotun Ibrahim Abdul, encouraged students to take responsibility for their futures, stressing that accountants are indispensable to accountability and business success. He reassured the college of its commitment to professionalism, ethics, and nurturing the next generation of accountants.
The celebration also acknowledged ICAN’s 67,000 members for maintaining confidence in Nigeria’s economy and applauded international accounting bodies for promoting global standards.
