The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has called on accounting professionals to embrace emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence while upholding ethical standards and professional integrity.
Speaking during the maiden ICAN Professorial Chair in Accounting Public Lecture at the University of Lagos, ICAN President, Prof Mallam Haruna Yahaya, represented by Dr Etofolam Osuji, said accountants must adapt to global digital disruptions through innovation and continuous learning.
Osuji noted that the modern accountant must go beyond financial reporting to become a strategic adviser capable of navigating technology-driven environments. “Ethics and professional judgment remain the foundation of trust in financial reporting, even as innovation reshapes our work,” he said.
Keynote speaker, Prof. Olusegun Vincent of Pan-Atlantic University, urged universities to update curricula, adopt experiential learning, and integrate sustainability principles into accounting education.
He warned that outdated training and weak exposure to digital tools hinder competitiveness, adding that “accountants must combine technological proficiency with moral integrity to stay relevant globally.”
The event also marked ICAN’s Diamond Anniversary.
