Professor Anthony Oyenuga, Dean of the College of Vocational and Technology Education (COVTED) at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), has urged the Nigerian government to incorporate road safety education into the curricula of secondary and tertiary institutions to reduce the alarming rate of accidents on the country’s highways.
Speaking at the 33rd Inaugural Lecture at TASUED, titled “The Vehicle: An Enemy in Camouflage,” Oyenuga spoke on the dual nature of vehicles, noting their positive functions alongside the dangers they pose, such as pollution and road accidents.
Professor Oyenuga stated that introducing road safety education at an early age would instil a culture of responsible driving among Nigerians.
He suggested that vehicle manufacturers improve safety by integrating sensors capable of halting a vehicle in the event of an impending crash within a one-kilometre radius.
He also spoke about the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, careful journey planning, adherence to traffic laws, and speed control in reducing road accidents.
The professor called on government officials at all levels to launch public awareness campaigns that educate citizens on the importance of responsible motoring.
He further urged stricter compliance with traffic signals, road signs, and vehicle maintenance to ensure road safety.
TASUED Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwole Banjo, congratulated Oyenuga for his academic achievements and echoed his call for better road safety measures.
The inaugural lecture, attended by prominent figures including Oba Abdul-Razaq Banjo, the Olokine of Ojowo Ijebu Igbo, was a testament to the university’s commitment to addressing critical issues impacting Nigerian society.
Oyenuga, who made history as the first professor of Industrial Technical Education at TASUED and the third in South Western Nigeria, concluded his lecture with a call for greater focus on vehicle safety in the classroom and everyday life.
