Police in Kaduna State have denied claims that officers caused the death of a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Abdurraheem Mustapha.
A media platform had reported that Mustapha was killed after police officers drove against traffic along Sultan Road in Kaduna. His brother, Sabiu Mustapha Abubakar, alleged the victim was struck on the head by a police officer while on a motorcycle. Eyewitnesses also claimed that bystanders pressured officers to take him to the hospital, accusing police of later attempting to cover up the incident.
However, in a statement on Monday, police spokesperson Mansir Hassan said the account was “false and misleading.” According to him, mobile police personnel on escort duty had stopped at a junction on Friday when a speeding motorcyclist collided with their vehicle from behind. He confirmed that the passenger, later identified as Mustapha, was taken to the hospital by the officers but died while receiving treatment. The motorcycle rider reportedly fled the scene.
Hassan said the officers involved had reported themselves to their station and written statements. He added that investigations were underway and urged members of the public with credible information to come forward.
