The Kano State Government has maintained its claim as the top performer in the 2025 NECO Senior School Certificate Examinations, despite figures showing a mixed outcome.
Kano registered 136,762 candidates, the highest in the country. Of these, 68,159 secured five credits, including English and Mathematics, while 68,603 failed, resulting in a 49.84% pass rate. This means more than half of Kano’s candidates did not make the benchmark.
By contrast, Abia State presented only 11,260 candidates but achieved the nation’s best success rate. With 9,381 passes and 1,879 failures, Abia recorded 83.31 per cent, far above Kano’s performance on proportional grounds.
Education observers argue that while Kano produced the highest number of successful candidates in absolute terms, states like Abia performed better in quality and consistency. The figures have sparked renewed debate on how best to measure excellence in national examinations — by numbers or by percentages.
