Kano Converts 115-Year-Old Prison to Museum

The Kano State Government has announced plans to repurpose the historic Kurmawa prison, built in 1910, into a cultural museum.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed the plan during an inspection tour of the now-decommissioned facility. He described the structure as a colonial relic that should be preserved for educational and historical purposes rather than remain idle. “We want to conserve this place as a reminder of our heritage,” Yusuf said, noting that the museum will reflect the prison’s historical significance and showcase indigenous Kano culture.
