Kano Moves to Boost Technical Education with New Polytechnic

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State

Kano State is set to expand its offering of technical and vocational education following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s assent to a new law establishing Gaya Polytechnic.

The institution, located in Gaya Local Government Area, is expected to open up fresh pathways for young people seeking practical and technical skills in a region aiming to boost its human capital. The signing, attended by senior state lawmakers, including Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, marks one of the first significant legislative steps toward strengthening tertiary education under Yusuf’s administration.

In a statement, the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the new polytechnic will catalyse local economic growth while helping to address the gap between academic training and industry needs.

Governor Yusuf described the school as part of a long-term plan to decentralise higher education and promote development across the state’s senatorial districts. “This is not just about infrastructure,” he said. “It is about equipping our youth with skills to participate in the economy.”

When fully operational, Gaya Polytechnic is expected to create new jobs, drive innovation, and offer more students access to affordable, skills-based education — a crucial shift in a state where demand for technical competency continues to rise.
