The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that it could resume industrial action if the government fails to address unresolved issues affecting public universities.
Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi, Zonal Coordinator Prof Timothy Namo accused the government of failing to keep its promises since a warning strike was suspended in November.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities declared a two-week strike on October 13 2025, following repeated delays in negotiations. The action was put on hold after an emergency National Executive Council meeting, allowing for further engagement.
Prof Namo said “practically nothing” has changed since then, despite the government being given a one-month window to conclude talks. He criticised a proposed salary increase as “inadequate” and “incapable of addressing the growing exodus of lecturers”.
ASUU also raised concerns over unpaid promotion arrears dating back to 2017, delayed deductions, and what it described as “misrepresentations” by government negotiators.
Citing national revenue increases over the last two years, the union argued that the education sector’s challenges were due to “a lack of political will, not funding.”
It is now calling on students, labour groups, traditional rulers, and lawmakers to apply pressure, warning that public universities remain at risk unless issues surrounding pay, welfare, and working conditions are resolved.
