Despite Kano State’s significant educational investment, pupils at Government Secondary School (GSS) Kumbotso continue to learn in severely deteriorated classrooms.
This situation has persisted for nearly a year, following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector.
In 2025, Kano State allocated ₦168.35 billion to education, representing 31% of its ₦549 billion budget, the highest allocation for any sector.
This followed previous allocations of ₦95 billion in 2024 and ₦51.6 billion in 2023.
Additionally, the state benefits from international initiatives, such as the World Bank’s AGILE project, which funds the construction of 130 schools, and UNICEF’s Learning Passport, which has enrolled over 1.4 million learners.
However, a recent visit to GSS Kumbotso in the Kumbotso Local Government Area revealed classrooms with cracked walls, collapsed ceilings, and students sitting on bare floors due to a lack of furniture.
This reflects a broader issue, as UNICEF reports that Kano has nearly one million out-of-school children, the highest in Nigeria.
The civic technology platform Monitng, which exposed the conditions at GSS Kumbotso, calls for urgent intervention.
It urges the Kano State Ministry of Education and other authorities to prioritise the school’s rehabilitation and ensure that education funds are appropriately utilised.
