The Kwara State Government has announced results for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with notable improvements in pass rates for key subjects, including Mathematics and English.
Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, attributed the success to the continued investments made by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration in the educational sector. He also noted a significant 27% rise in enrollment, especially among female candidates.
“Between 2019 and 2025, the BECE has experienced sustained growth and gradual gains in equity,” Olohungbebe stated, pointing out that total enrollment rose from 45,761 candidates in 2019 to 57,787 in 2025. The representation of female students also increased slightly, from 47.89% to 48.33%, highlighting a positive trend in female participation in the examination.
Focusing on the most recent examination cycle, he noted, “Total enrollment grew from 56,508 in 2024 to 57,787 in 2025,” accompanied by significant improvements in attendance rates. For instance, English attendance improved from 95.29% to 96.09%.
The Commissioner added that these access gains were accompanied by notable achievement gains. “Pass rates improved across several core subjects, with Mathematics increasing by 2.23 percentage points, English by 2.94 points, National Values by 4.51 points, and more,” he explained.
He further highlighted that the average scores in crucial subjects indicate genuine progress. “These improvements show that we are not only increasing pass rates but also enhancing overall student performance,” he remarked.
