The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed the University of Medicine and Health Sciences Bill, marking a significant step toward tackling the country’s shortage of medical professionals and boosting local research capacity. The bill, completed on Thursday, November 20, will now go to the Governor for assent.
During the session, lawmakers, including Adams Noheem, Mojeed Fatai, and Richard Kasunmu, paused to reflect on the nation’s escalating insecurity and observed a one-minute silence in memory of victims of recent attacks. Speaker Dr Mudasiru Obasa expressed shock over the killing of an Army General, while members highlighted kidnappings in Kebbi State and a church attack in Ekiti State. The House resolved to urge government and military authorities to intensify efforts to protect citizens.
Amid the heavy discussions, members also commemorated International Men’s Day and International Children’s Day, emphasising the role of men in family and society. Lagos Island representative Omolara Olumegbon called for recognition of men’s contributions, while the Speaker described true manhood as leadership, responsibility, and integrity.
Lawmakers said the dual observances were a reminder of the need to protect and nurture families while pursuing legislative reforms that strengthen healthcare and community resilience.
