The Vice-Chancellor of Wesley University, Ondo Town, Prof. Samuel Obeka, has suggested that Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) be restructured to include security training for graduate youths.
Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the university’s convocation on Thursday, Obeka, a Methodist Church clergyman, expressed concern about rising insecurity across the country. He proposed that citizens be licensed to carry weapons for self-defence, and that NYSC be decentralised into two stages: one after secondary school and another after university.
“Today, insurgency groups attack innocent citizens freely… it is high time Nigerians are equipped to defend themselves,” Obeka said.
He highlighted the security measures at Wesley University, including fenced hostels, guardian counsellors, and multiple security posts to safeguard students and staff.
Obeka also spoke about the university’s development, noting the accreditation of the College of Medical and Allied Health Sciences and the Law faculty, the addition of 27 new programmes, and the institution’s unique support for deaf students at the PhD level.
The Vice Chancellor said the proposals aim to combine education with practical skills that could enhance both national security and personal safety.
