The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) in Cross River State has received a 10,000-litre oxygen plant, described by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) as the most comprehensive in Nigeria’s South-South region.
Dr Temitope Ilori, NACA’s Director-General, inspected the facility on Thursday, noting the plant was donated under the Global Fund COVID-19 RM grant, facilitated by the Federal Government. The grant also supplied over 400 cylinders, humidifiers, concentrators, and pulse oximeters to support emergency and critical care services.
Ilori said the agency was satisfied that the equipment was being effectively used and highlighted additional fully functional oxygen plants in Ogoja and Ikom, with five-year warranties and maintenance contracts in place. She stressed that state ownership, skilled personnel, and continuous maintenance were essential for sustaining the facilities.
UCTH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ikpeme Ikpeme, said the plant operates under a revolving fund model, ensuring revenue supports ongoing maintenance and oxygen refills. He added that the hospital now meets its own oxygen needs while supplying surrounding facilities.
The CMD said the new Accident and Emergency complex will further expand capacity, including additional ICUs, neonatal units, trauma theatres, and emergency beds. He described the oxygen produced as high-quality, ending previous shortages and reducing reliance on uncertified sources.
