Prof Moses Akanbi of Lagos State University (LASU) has disclosed how he saved the institution N820 million through his technological innovations.
He spoke during LASU’s 114th inaugural lecture, themed “The Nature of Error: Human Fallibility Versus Divine Infallibility in Computational Thought”, at Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo.
Akanbi recounted that years ago a contractor demanded N500,000 for a data-related installation, which in today’s exchange amounts to N820 million.
This prompted him to develop in-house solutions to automate data management, eliminating inefficiencies in result computation and student record handling.
He pioneered the Automated Marksheet (AMS) for desktop result processing, later expanding to the Automated Students’ Results Package (ASRP), Students’ Total Records Application (e-STRAPP), Post-UME Screening Package (PUSP), and Central Admission Screening App (CASA).
These tools streamlined examinations, admissions and records management, saving the university millions of naira and thousands of staff hours.
As Director of LASU Integrated Data Centre, Akanbi highlighted the practical impact of his research on Nigerian higher education. LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, described him as a major asset, noting that his scholarly work continues to deliver tangible benefits to the university.
