LASU Vice-Chancellor Urges Tech Use in Theatre Arts

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has called for greater use of technology in the teaching and practice of theatre arts in Nigeria.

She appealed while addressing participants at the 2025 annual conference of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA), held at LASU, Ojo. Themed “Technology, Intercultural Dialogue and the Future of the Performing Arts,” the event marked the first time in nearly four decades that LASU hosted the gathering.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello stressed that the future of theatre was not dependent on creativity and enterprise alone, but also the ability to adapt to digital realities. She emphasised that technology is already transforming how performances are created, shared, and experienced worldwide; therefore, Nigerian practitioners must adapt to it before they are left behind.

She said the conference provided scholars, practitioners, and students with a platform to reflect on these changes critically and urged Nigerian theatre to adopt innovation in order to remain relevant in a rapidly changing global arts landscape.
