Prof Adetokunbo Fabamwo, Chief Medical Director, (LASUTH)
The Chief Medical Director of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Prof Adetokunbo Fabamwo, has urged government authorities to prioritise resource allocation for maternal and child health. He made the call at the 24th Biennial Conference and Investiture Ceremony of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Lagos Branch.
Represented by Prof. Yusuf Oshodi, Fabamwo said that maternal and child health account for about 70 per cent of global healthcare needs. He warned that preventable deaths among women, newborns and children remain high, particularly in rural communities.
He highlighted persistent challenges such as poverty, weak health systems, gender inequality, underfunding, inadequate personnel, and poor infrastructure. According to him, women require focused medical support during pregnancy and childbirth, while children need immunisation, nutrition and preventive care for healthy development.
Fabamwo called for improved funding, stronger health policies and multi-sector collaboration to support Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 5.
Speakers at the conference, including MWAN National President, Dr Zainab Muhammad-Idris, and MWAN Lagos President, Dr Funmi Ige, emphasised the need for evidence-based policies and sustained advocacy to strengthen healthcare for women and children. They noted that medical women continue to drive community outreach, health education and policy engagement across Lagos.
