The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government 10 days to address unresolved issues affecting the university system. The warning followed ASUU’s National Executive Council meeting held at Taraba State University between November 8 and 9.
In a statement signed by its President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the union accused certain government officials of misrepresenting the status of negotiations and undermining efforts to reach a settlement. ASUU had suspended its two-week warning strike on October 22, granting the government a one-month window that expires on November 22.
The union’s demands include a review of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, payment of outstanding salaries and earned allowances, and the release of the university revitalisation fund. ASUU warned it would resume industrial action without further notice if concrete steps were not taken.
The union said the government’s partial payment of promotion arrears and release of third-party deductions should not be presented as substantial progress. It described the proposed salary offer as inadequate and warned that poor welfare would continue to fuel brain drain.
ASUU urged the government to demonstrate political will, arguing that available revenue figures contradict claims of limited funds. It called on stakeholders, including traditional rulers and labour groups, to pressure the government to meet its obligations.
