Prof. Adekunle Olowe, Head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), has warned of the alarming rise of drug-resistant infections, calling for urgent measures to prevent a global health crisis.
Speaking during World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week in Osogbo, Olowe described AMR as a threat where bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to medicines designed to eliminate them.
He cited overuse and misuse of antimicrobials, poor infection control, weak sanitation, and inadequate regulation in both humans and animals as key drivers.
Olowe stressed that AMR affects humans, animals, and the environment, and urged the adoption of coordinated, multi-sectoral strategies to combat it. “Only use antimicrobials when prescribed, complete the full course, practice proper hygiene, and promote vaccination,” he advised.
He also called on governments, research institutions and the private sector to fund the development of new antibiotics, vaccines, and rapid diagnostic tools, noting that innovation is critical as existing medicines lose effectiveness.
The professor emphasised that public awareness, responsible drug use, and strengthened infection control are vital to protecting global health from the growing threat of AMR.
