Lawyers Fault Police Academy Over Recruitment Clash

Top lawyers in Nigeria have spoken out about the ongoing disagreement between the Police Academy in Kano, the Police Service Commission (PSC), and the Ministry of Police Affairs over who should handle police recruitment.

The Police Academy recently placed an advert for its 12th regular degree course, saying applications would run from July 28 to September 8, 2025. The PSC rejected the advert because they were not informed of the recruitment and that the proper steps were not followed. It claimed that key bodies—like the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Federal Character Commission, and the Nigeria Police Force—were not consulted.

The PSC said that it has the legal right to recruit officers into the Nigeria Police Force, according to the Constitution and a Supreme Court ruling. Lawyers now insist the PSC is correct, saying the Police Academy’s move goes against the law and could lead to confusion and conflict.
