The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has launched the International Centre for Climate Change, Floods, and Environmental Sustainability (I3CFES) to address the growing environmental challenges in Nigeria.
The centre, inaugurated at the university’s lecture theatre, is designed to focus on research, policy advocacy, and community-based solutions to climate change. It will also provide consultancy services, support green enterprises, and build international partnerships.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi described the initiative as crucial, especially for Lokoja, a flood-prone city situated at the confluence of the Rivers Niger and Benue. He said the centre would serve as a hub for innovation and resilience, providing evidence-based solutions to environmental crises.
The university appointed Emeritus Prof. Jimmy O. Adegoke, a renowned global climate expert, as the pioneer director. Notably, he accepted the role on a pro bono basis, a move hailed as a significant boost to the centre’s credibility.
The new hub is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s response to flooding and sustainability challenges.
