The Nigerian Army College of Nursing (NACON) has started its Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) degree programme in partnership with the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The first batch of students recently took part in a matriculation ceremony held at the NACON Auditorium, Myhoung Barracks, Yaba, Lagos.
This marks the beginning of the BNSc programme at NACON, following an agreement signed between both institutions in October 2022. The National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the programme in 2023.
Speaking at the event, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, congratulated the new students. She described nursing as one of the most respected professions in the world and urged the students to take their academic journey seriously. According to her, they are not just entering a classroom but starting a path that will shape their future.
Professor Ogunsola stated that the partnership between UNILAG and NACON is robust and will provide students with access to quality education, research opportunities, and international standards. “This is not just a paper agreement,” she said, “Your degree will be respected all over the world.” She also spoke about the shortage of nurses in Nigeria, mainly due to the trend of health workers leaving the country (also known as “Japa syndrome”). She encouraged the students to see their training not just as a course but as a calling to help others.
