Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Monday, May 12, staged a peaceful protest on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, expressing frustration over their inability to access the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.
The protest, which disrupted traffic flow for hours, was peaceful and recorded no incidents of violence. The students, however, blocked the major expressway to draw attention to what they described as a lack of transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the student loan fund under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
They also raised concerns over the rising cost of tuition in tertiary institutions and called for urgent improvements in learning conditions and campus infrastructure.
The protest was later called off after the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, met with the students and appealed for calm.
He urged the NANS leaders to clear the road for free movement and assured them their complaints would be passed on to the appropriate authorities.
Following his intervention, the students agreed to end the protest. They proceeded to the State Command Headquarters at Eleweran for further engagement with the police on ways to push their demands through structured dialogue.
