NASENI Launches FutureMakers Initiative to Inspire Innovation among Youth
The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has launched a new programme to identify and nurture young innovators from an early age.
The initiative, called FutureMakers by NASENI, was unveiled in Abuja by the agency’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Suleiman Halilu. It targets children aged 5-16 from secondary schools and universities nationwide.
Mr Halilu said the scheme would introduce participants to design thinking, basic engineering, creativity, and technology, alongside mentorship from industry professionals. Selected students will also have access to prototyping laboratories, innovation challenges and pitch competitions.
He said the programme was part of NASENI’s long-term plan to strengthen Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem and prepare young people for careers in science, technology and entrepreneurship, adding that early exposure was critical to building future innovators.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on NASENI, Senator Francis Ezenwa, said the initiative reflected a commitment to building a Nigeria that creates, rather than consumes, technology.
NASENI officials said the first cohort would run from December 2025 to February 2026, with 60 children selected from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Top performers will receive prizes, scholarships and other incentives.
