The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is drawing attention to the role and relevance of unionism in Nigeria’s public universities.
The branch has hosted a one-day lecture titled “The Legitimacy of Unionism in the Public Sector: Challenges and the Way Forward”, delivered by Chief Funmi Agnes Sessi, Chairperson of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). The event also offers free medical screening for staff and students.
Union leaders argue that non-academic staff face persistent challenges, including irregular salaries, limited welfare provisions, and underfunded facilities. NASU’s lecture aims to explore how unions can safeguard staff rights while contributing to the effective governance of universities.
Speaking ahead of the event, NASU officials stressed that unions are critical for advocating fair employment terms and promoting staff well-being. They highlighted that public sector staff play a central role in sustaining universities’ academic and operational functions, yet their voices are often underrepresented in policy decisions.
The University community is encouraged to participate, reflecting a broader debate on balancing institutional development with workers’ rights in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
