The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) has announced plans to partner with the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna), and the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to strengthen teaching, learning, and research in mathematical sciences.
The Centre’s Director-General, Professor Promise Mebine, disclosed this during a meeting of the NMC Governing Council, according to a statement released on Friday by the Centre’s spokesperson, Onyekachi Njoku.
Mebine said the partnerships aim to enhance postgraduate training and research in fields such as Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Theoretical Physics, Statistics, and Computer Science.
He explained that collaboration with FUT Minna would enable the NMC to run postgraduate diplomas, master’s, and doctoral programmes in mathematical sciences. Meanwhile, the partnership with NOUN would help establish the Centre as a national hub for excellence, supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
According to him, the initiative is part of broader plans to convert the NMC into a specialised National University of Mathematical Sciences (NUMS).
“The NOUN Centre of Excellence with TETFund will help address the critical shortage of high-level manpower in mathematical sciences across industries and academia,” Mebine said.
He added that the programmes would develop experts in both traditional and emerging areas such as algebra, number theory, theoretical physics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning — disciplines vital to Nigeria’s technological and industrial growth.
Mebine also called for an amendment to the law establishing the NMC to fast-track its transformation into the proposed university, saying the move would position Nigeria as a regional hub for advanced mathematical research and innovation.
