The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education (OSSAP-TVEE) is preparing to launch a nationwide skills training programme as part of the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS).
This initiative aims to increase the number of skilled workers in Nigeria to at least 50% within the next two years.
Dr Abiola Arogundade, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Education, stated that six states have been selected as training centres, one for each of the country’s geopolitical zones.
These states are Adamawa in the Northeast, Ondo in the South-West, Abuja in the North Central, Kebbi in the North-West, Delta in the South-South, and Enugu in the Southeast.
Each training centre will offer courses in three skill areas selected based on market demand and trainees’ interests.
For example, in the North-Central zone, the training will focus on Cybersecurity, Solar Installation, and Graphic Design.
Participants from six states in that zone, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, and Plateau, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, will be eligible.
Each training session will last 10 days and provide practical skills to 300 participants, equipping them with the abilities to improve their chances of employment or start their businesses.
The programme reflects the federal government’s commitment to building a more skilled and employable workforce across Nigeria.
