When the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) commenced on May 24, 2024, it was met with widespread scepticism. Many Nigerians were worried about how the scheme would work, and there were genuine fears it could go the way of many government past programmes in Nigeria.
However, just one year later, NELFUND is proving doubters wrong. The programme has not only taken off successfully, but it is helping many students fulfil their dreams of getting an education.
To date, over 600,000 students have registered on the NELFUND platform, with more than 550,000 of them having been approved for loans. A total of ₦56.85 billion has been allocated to cover school fees and student upkeep across various schools in Nigeria.
For many young Nigerians who have been struggling to pay tuition or even afford food while in school, this loan is a significant relief. Some say it came just in time to stop them from dropping out.
The Managing Director of NELFUND, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, said the loan scheme is not just about money. It is about giving students a chance to succeed. “One year ago, we made a promise to Nigerian students. Today, we are happy we are delivering on that promise,” he said.
The loan programme is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It is designed to alleviate the financial burden that prevents many young people from attending school. The government states that no student should be denied education due to a lack of financial resources.
NELFUND is also collaborating with schools, state governments, and student unions to ensure that the loans reach the intended recipients and processes are expedited.
However, the programme is not perfect. Some students have complained about delays in getting their money. Others are worried about how they will repay the loan after graduation, especially if they do not find a job quickly.
There are also questions about whether students in private universities will benefit and how NELFUND plans to track and recover the loans in future.
However, despite these issues, the idea is commendable. If the government continues to do the right thing and support students, NELFUND could become one of the best developments to happen to education in Nigeria in recent times.
Looking ahead, the agency has committed to continuing to improve the system and ensuring that more students benefit from it. The goal is to ensure that no Nigerian child is denied the chance to attend school due to a lack of funds.
As NELFUND clocks one year, the journey so far shows that with good plans and serious follow-through, government programmes can truly make life better for the people. This is just the beginning, and many students are now watching and hoping for even better things to come.
