The National Senior Secondary Education Commission has announced that Nigeria’s new national standards for senior secondary schools will be fully implemented within the next nine months.
These National Minimum Standards were developed by the Commission and approved during the 68th National Council on Education in October 2024.
They were officially launched by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, in February 2025.
At a recent event marking the start of the 2025 Quality Assurance Monitoring and Evaluation Exercise at Federal Government College, Malali in Kaduna State, Dr Iyela Ajayi, Executive Secretary of the Commission, explained that the goal of this initiative is to improve the quality of education across all senior secondary schools in the country.
The new standards will ensure that schools provide a positive learning environment that promotes academic excellence, critical thinking, and overall development of students.
Dr Ajayi spoke on President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to education as a key factor for Nigeria’s progress.
He added that copies of the new standards have already been given to state education officials, and after nine months, the Commission will begin enforcing these standards nationwide.
The exercise will involve strict monitoring and evaluation to identify areas of strength and weakness in schools, promote best practices, and help teachers improve their skills for better student outcomes.
Kaduna State’s Commissioner for Education, Muhammad Bello, expressed his support for the initiative, noting that although the state has invested heavily in education, monitoring and evaluation have been lacking.
He assured that Kaduna will fully support the Commission’s efforts to raise education quality in the state.
This effort aims to create accountability and drive continuous improvement in senior secondary education across Nigeria.
